My Journey with My First Digital Product: From Idea to Launch
25th March 2023 will forever be a date I remember because I launched my first digital product on the internet, a printable yearly calendar. I had planned to launch this digital product for a long time, and finally, it has materialized, filling my heart with joy. It was also one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.
Launching a digital product can be a daunting task, especially if you’re new to the game. In this post, I want to share some reflections on my journey, from the initial idea to the final launch.
The Idea:
It all started with an idea. I had been thinking about creating a digital product for a while, but I wasn’t sure what to create. After brainstorming a few ideas, I settled on one that I felt passionate about — an e-book/printable PDF of a 2023 calendar featuring inspirational quotes from legendary figures in motorsport. When thinking about the design, I wanted to follow minimalist design principles. Additionally, I wanted my product to be more than a usual calendar; I wanted it to provide a source of energy and inspiration that could feed one’s inner drive and ambition.
El Plan:
Once I had the idea, I started working on a plan. I researched the market and competition to see what was out there regarding calendar design and how I could differentiate myself. I learned that although there are calendars with quotes from celebrated athletes, there were no calendars dedicated entirely to motorsport legendary figures. That’s how I wanted to differentiate myself in the calendar market. I created an outline for the design and identified the tools and resources I needed, such as graphic design tools to create the product.
The Creation:
The creation process was both exciting and challenging. It was exciting because I was building something that I had never done before and was passionate about. I had this inner happiness that if my motorsport friends found out, they might like my work. I found the creation process challenging because I was battling with the fear of failure and thoughts like “what if my product sucks or my friends laugh at my design.” There were many thoughts floating around my mind, which was tiring and difficult to handle. I tried to calm myself down and focus on one thing at a time.
I designed layouts for my design, designed small components for my design, and ended up gaining momentum and motivation to complete the entire design in 5 hours.
The Launch:
Finally, after 5 hours of hard work, I felt my digital product was ready for launch. I chose Gumroad as the platform to sell my product in a PDF format and set up a sales page with a compelling description. Thanks to ChatGPT, it helped me refine my thoughts and correct my sentences.
I promoted my digital product on all my social media channels, such as Snapchat, Instagram, and with my friends and family.
The Outcome:
The launch was a success! I made my first sales in the first hour of the launch and continued to see sales picking up. I had 4 sales in the first 24 hours of my product launch, mostly from my close friends who purchased my product. I was proud of my work, and my heart filled with gratitude because my friends who bought the product were willing to take a chance on me, which gives me confidence to keep going. Their support means the world to me.
Finally, the most significant outcome was the sense of pride and accomplishment I felt. Even though i haven’t made any sales in terms of revenue yet. But i’m proud that I had taken an idea and turned it into a tangible product that people might find valuable.
It was a great feeling! Not only did the exercise of launching a digital product helped me to practice my design skills but also helped me to explore how can i monetize my work by sharing it with the internet world.
In short, I’ve fulfilled my plan on launching my first digital product, what I have learned has taken me to a new beginning. I believe that in the future when I have more good products that i will launch. I hope, I will be able to propose and launch my future digital products with more confidence and courage, as well as know better about the promotion process to monetize from my products.
